Hello and welcome to Landmark — where the gavel meets the climate crisis. This is our first post, and we’re super excited to get started!

Landmark is a newsletter focused on climate change through a legal lens. We believe not only that legal dramas are straight up gripping, but also that courtrooms (and legislatures, and bureaucratic agencies…) are where some of the most interesting and significant climate change and environmental fights will take place in the years ahead.

In this space you’ll find journalism about lawsuits against Big Oil, legal challenges to major fossil fuel developments in Alaska and the Gulf Mexico and other environmental fights over things like plastics or PFAS. Landmark will dive a bit deeper than what you might find elsewhere — telling the stories of the people fighting these climate battles, what their arguments actually mean and what to expect next.

Landmark takes the basic tenets of journalism seriously. Fairness, skepticism and independence are crucial to the project. Landmark also leads with the assumption that information should be accessible and understandable. We won’t bog you down with legalese or talk down to you.
